Back at work.
Feb. 3rd, 2012 09:17 amSo, here I am again, day 3 of term and day 2 of students, and I already have bags under my eyes and I fell asleep on the bus on the way home. I had planned to cycle both ways yesterday, but I got to work and realised it was a Bad Idea.
I'm mostly teaching the same kids I was last year, except I don't have this year's yr11s and I do have this year's yr7s.
The year 7 kids seem nice enough so far. It's rare to have behavioural problems in the first week, those usually come out when they get a bit more comfortable, usually 3-4 weeks in, so we'll see how they go. We don't have a clear idea of their personalities yet.
The yr10s will be an interesting logistical challenge. They're accellerated, so they're doing yr11 course work. Because they're accellerated, there are only two teachers to take them instead of the usual 3. This wouldn't be a problem, except that they are split into two maths streams and less than a third of the class are in the one that I'm (nominally) teaching.
So, however you look at it, I'll have to take around half the Methods kids in my group. I'll probably end up mainly teaching the Methods curriculum, even though that's not what I'm doing officially. There's just no good way to do it without a 3rd teacher. If we had three, then the Methods group would be split into two and we'd all be laughing.
I'm trying to be patient. This is a new system and it's still in the teething stage. This is only the 2nd year that the senior students have been in the new buildings, and that we've had year 10s in the 3:50 model. So I'll give it time and see how it goes, and hopefully next year something will change for the better.
Mainly right now, I'm very tired. Hopefully this weekend will involve plenty of relaxation for me.
